Erykah Badu Has Her Own Weed Strain, Plus 4 Other Women-Owned Cannabis Brands to Celebrate This 4/20

by Faith Green

Despite our long-running relationship with the plant, women in cannabis have been severely underrepresented. As of 2023, only 22% of women hold executive positions in the field, which is down from the 32% reported in 2017. Nonetheless, women are finally starting to make their way in the cannabis industry, and with a little digging, you can find a women-owned brand that’s tailored to your hyper-specific stoner needs. Whether you use marijuana to medicate, meditate, or relax, here are five sustainable and women-owned cannabis brands to check out this 4/20.

Foria Wellness

Foria Wellness highlights the intersection between cannabis and sexual wellness with their products like their Arousal oil and intimacy suppositories. They’re also focused on general wellness and relaxation. Their luxurious CBD bath salts are full of sensual aphrodisiacs like rose petals and cocoa, and their Relief Salve offers reprieve from menstrual cramps, muscle aches, and bad vibes. We just hope they bring back their beloved CBD aphrodisiac vape, which was unfortunately discontinued with the PACT ACT in 2022.

Pure Beauty

Pure Beauty is a cannabis brand that is not only women and minority owned, but it’s also extremely ethical. Pure Beauty is doing their part to be both sustainable and charitable; their cannabis is grown with California tap water, and their organic, nutrient-rich soil (which they also donate to local parks) uses natural insects, fungi, and bacteria for optimal cultivation. They even use plant-based biodegradable packaging! Pure Beauty’s ethics extend beyond that; they donate a portion of their proceeds to fund incarcerated populations. They offer high quality cannabis, (including a pink “cigarette” pack of pre-rolls) for all your stoner girl needs. Act quickly though, their most popular products sell out insanely fast.

That Badu

With song lyrics like “I am feeling kinda hungry ’cause my high is coming down,” it’s no surprise that Grammy Award-winning musician Erykah Badu gets high. So much so that she created her own cannabis strain. Earlier this year, Badu collaborated with Cookies Cannabis to concoct the hybrid strain, That Badu, which was released on March 8th for International Women’s Day. The strain was specifically designed by Badu herself to cater to the needs of women and other stoners with uteruses.“The herb is for everybody, but we had women in mind [because we want] to further the conversation on women’s studies in cannabinoids,” Badu has explained.  The strain is a combo of the hard hitting strains  “Jet Fuel Gelato” and “Limoncello,” but it won’t leave you couch locked; Badu designed the strain to uplift your mood and incite creativity, leaving you in a hazy spell of happiness and motivation. Check to see if That Badu is available near you, and maybe you’ll be inspired to write your own sultry, smoke-induced ballads.

 Josephine and Billies

Josephine and Billies, often shortened to “J&B’s,” considers themselves to be the first dispensary both for and by Women of Color. Their name serves to honor musicians Josephene Baker and Billie Holiday, two incredible black women who were wrongly targeted and persecuted by The U.S. Government for their cannabis usage. J&B’s is making an effort to diversify the cannabis industry by widening accessibility to plant medicine as well as cannabis education. Their Los Angeles shop has been described as “Black Girl Magic meets Jazz Age Speakeasy,” and with products like Pamos’ THC Peach & Guava Bellini Cocktail, and Rose Petal Infused Pre-rolls, Josephine & Billie’s might just be the classiest cannabis collective on the list.

Kiva

Kiva is a high quality edibles brand that was founded in 2010, and they’ve been making a name for themselves in the cannabis industry ever since. The brand filled a much needed gap in the industry at the time, as the ability to obtain reliable and consistent edibles was few and far between. Their decadent, expertly crafted chocolates (which come in flavors like Espresso Dark Chocolate, or High Dose Churro Milk Chocolate) are made using sustainably sourced cacao. That’s not all, they even offer an infused Turkey Gravy mix, which they say will “have the household back in harmony in no time.” Their minis are personally recommended; at 5 mg per serving, these Kiva mini bars are a fantastic addition to your stoner kit. Keep one in your purse for “emergencies,” or eat it for a bright and mellow haze.

4/20 is definitely a time for some deep self-care. Whether you want to enhance your relationship with spirituality, heighten your sexual wellness, or just indulge in a good old fashioned bubble bath, these brands have got you covered. So chill out, grab your THC bath salts, and order yourself some cannabis champagne. It’s time to smoke a (lavender infused) girl blunt!
